CMOS Basics : Introduction to modern digital design and Technology Trends. Review of Solid State Physics and MOS Transistors. Manufacturing Process and Design Rules. Threshold Voltage, Mobility degradation & velocity saturation, channel length modulation, body effect, drain induced barrier lowering, MOSFET capacitances-Junction capacitances-Oxide related capacitances – Scaling - Short channel effects. Overview of VLSI Design flow and VLSI design styles. MOS SPICE Models and simulation, CAD tools.
CMOS fabrication process, nMOS, pMOS and CMOS process flow, Advantages of CMOS technology. Basic n–well,p-well and twin tub CMOS Process.
CMOS inverter: CMOS Inverter Basics, propagation delay of inverters, transient response; Dynamic, short circuit and leakage power analysis. noise margin. Stick diagram and layout of CMOS inverter. Low Power Design principles.
Static CMOS logic circuits: CMOS combinational logic, Delay estimation and Gate sizing (Logical Effort), Power Dissipation. Ratioed logic, Asymmetric gate, skewed gates. Pass transistor logic, transmission gates.
Dynamic CMOS logic circuits: pseudo-nMOS logic, dynamic CMOS logic, charge sharing, Domino logic and its derivatives. voltage bootstrapping. Clocked CMOS circuits. Level-restoring circuit.
CMOS Sequential circuits: CMOS latches, CMOS flip flops, dual edge triggered flip flops, Setup and hold time measurement. D, SR and JK flip flop circuits.
Memory Designs: Type of Memories, design and analysis of ROM Cells, SRAM, DRAM, EPROM, EEPROM, Flash, CAM. Memory read/write operations and timing. Memory Peripheral Circuits, Power Dissipation in Memory.
I/O Circuits: ESD Protection, Input Circuits, Output Circuits, Pad Drivers and Protection Circuit, On-Chip Clock Generation/Distribution, Latch-up and its Prevention. Voltage Reference, Drivers/Buffers.
Programmable logic devices: Programmable logic cells, Gate Array, PLA, PAL, PROM, PLD, FPGA. Interconnect delays in FPGAs. Features of advanced FPGAs, Comparison of ASICs, FPGAs.
VLSI testing: Need for testing, design strategies for test, chip level and system level test techniques. Variability and Design for Manufacturing.
